Original The Fox and Hounds Hotel

Our Story

The building began as The Fox and Hounds Hotel in 1908 with the ground floor as the bar and the snug.  The dance hall was housed on the first floor overlooking Newgate Street and the second floor was the accommodation for the landlord. In the late 1950’s, the building was bought by the family and remains in the family to present day.

Three years ago Pete and I decided to renovate the building and make part of it our home.  It was too large for one home so we decided to make the top floor into a self-contained apartment and so began The Morpeth Apartment.

We uncovered and rescued many original features such as the fireplaces and uncovered the tongue and groove and staircases.

It has been a great experience rummaging round salvage yards and antique shops to source items to add to the building.

To our delight we found a piece of skirting board that the original joiners from 1908 had signed and dated which we have framed and hangs proudly in our lounge.
